    The 13th International Conference on Space Optics (ICSO), co-organized by CNES and ESA, is being held virtually from 30 March to 2 April. Since 1991, ICSO is the must-attend event for optical, optoelectronic and photonic technologies for space applications. Opening the proceedings, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall underlined the roles played by these technologies and the challenges associated with them through past, present and future accomplishments.

    Thursday 18 February, the Perseverance rover, carrying a suite of seven instruments including the French SuperCam, a greatly enhanced version of the ChemCam instrument already operating on NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover since August 2012, set down in Jezero Crater, an impact basin 45 kilometres across, home to an ancient river delta that flowed 3½ billion years ago into a lake.

    Dans la soirée du jeudi 18 février 2021, le rover Perseverance, avec à son bord sept instruments, dont l’instrument français SuperCam, une version très améliorée de l’instrument ChemCam qui opère à bord du rover Curiosity sur Mars depuis août 2012, s’est posé dans le cratère Jezero, un bassin d’impact de 45 kilomètres de diamètre, qu’une rivière a rempli d’eau liquide il y a 3,5 milliards d’années.

  14. ANGELS, France's first industrial nanosatellite, extends the scope of space IoT

    Five times more powerful and 10 times smaller than its predecessors, ANGELS has been designed to address the current challenges of New Space: miniaturization, scaled-up performance and very low consumption. This technological wonder is opening up its services to current users and offering IoT players premium access to this new connectivity. ANGELS gives a first taste of the opportunities provided by Kinéis, the first constellation of European nanosatellites dedicated to IoT. Carrying a state-of-the-art ARGOS instrument, ANGELS is the operationnal proof of the success of the French nanosatellite sector, supported by CNES and leading manufacturers such as Thales Alenia Space, HEMERIA and Syrlinks.

  17. ESA RELEASES FIRST IMAGES FROM SOLAR ORBITER

    The European Space Agency (ESA) has released the first images from its Solar Orbiter spacecraft, which completed its commissioning phase in mid-June and made its first close approach to the Sun. Shortly thereafter, the European and U.S. science teams behind the mission’s ten instruments were able to test the entire instrument suite in concert for the first time.

    Tuesday 30 June, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall and Antoine Petit, Chairman & CEO of CNRS, the French national scientific research centre, gave a joint briefing about NASA’s Mars 2020 mission that will be taking the French-U.S. SuperCam instrument on its Perseverance rover to the red planet. The mission is set to launch atop an Atlas V from Cape Canaveral in Florida between 22 July and 11 August.
